Dad always said, "Finish what you start"

Friday August 22, 2008

By Steve Cave

No one is talking about keeping our troops in Iraq for the next 100 years. What McCain wants is to actually finish the job that we've started in Iraq, and then leave. Leaving the country in the middle of this mess would be potentially more destructive than if we hadn't gone over there at all! And no matter what someone's opinion is on the war, whether we should have fought it or not, we did fight it. We did. You can't erase that, even if you deplore it. What we should do now is make sure that we finish what we've started. McCain's stance is very clear on this issue. He says he,

"believes it is strategically and morally essential for the United States to support the Government of Iraq to become capable of governing itself and safeguarding its people. He strongly disagrees with those who advocate withdrawing American troops before that has occurred." (read more!)

And I think that this chunk of foreign policy will be a strong voting issue in these upcoming elections. Lahle's observations on Obama's naiveté when it comes to things like this is too apparent, and if McCain's campaign is worth two cents, they'll make sure Americans are thinking about this for the next few months.

And I think we should be. The whole world is feeling the gas crunch. The whole world is linked to our dropping economy. Terrorists are still active. This doesn't feel like the time to pick a president who's going to have great intentions. Honestly, while McCain is more aggressive than I think we need, at least we know what we'll get with him. With Obama, we get a soft lump of clay with good intentions? That's it?
